Oju Abuja Amala launches sustainable waste management programme to reward customers

In a bold move towards sustainability, Oju Abuja Amala, a popular restaurant in the Federal Capital Territory, has introduced an innovative waste management initiative to encourage customers to reduce solid waste.
The initiative incentivises patrons to reuse and return the restaurant’s take-out paper bags, reinforcing the company’s commitment to environmental conservation.
The programme, which seeks to minimise waste disposal, rewards customers who return at least 15 of the restaurant’s check-out bags with a meal voucher worth 20,000 naira. By doing so, Oju Abuja Amala aims to promote a culture of recycling and conscious consumption among its customers.
Speaking about the initiative, Shinayomi Daniel, the Executive Director and ambassador of Oju Abuja Amala, emphasized the restaurant’s dedication to sustainability. “At Oju Abuja Amala, we believe every customer has a role to play in building a sustainable environment. This waste reduction program is both an encouragement and an enlightenment initiative for Nigerians to reduce waste,” he stated.
He further explained that the collected bags would either be reused or recycled by the restaurant, ensuring that fewer waste materials end up in the environment. “For our customers, this is an opportunity to make a difference while enjoying great rewards. It’s a win-win for the company, our patrons, and the environment,” Daniel added.
Solid waste remains a significant environmental challenge in Nigeria, with approximately 332 million tonnes of solid waste generated annually. However, only 20-30% of this waste is properly collected and managed. Oju Abuja Amala’s initiative aligns with the broader efforts to curb the menace of waste pollution and drive a sustainable future.
With this programme, the restaurant is not only enhancing its brand’s corporate social responsibility but also setting a precedent for other businesses to adopt eco-friendly practices. As more organizations take responsibility for their environmental footprint, such initiatives will play a crucial role in fostering a cleaner and greener Nigeria.
