An alumnus of UNILAG and Managing Director of Geoplex Drillteq Limited, Wole Ogunsanya has called for empowering students with employable skills to ensure economic growth.

Ogunsanya, who said this, recently when he donated the Mechanical, Civil and Environmental Engineering Vertical Extension office floors at the University of Lagos, inaugurated by the Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association (UNILAGFEAA), emphasised the role of engineering education in addressing societal challenges.

“The choice of the vertical extension of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is quite glaring from a conversation with the dean, Prof. Sodiq, on the dire need for additional office spaces for the lecturers,” he said.

Ogunsanya was startled that the number of students in the faculty tripled compared to 36 years ago without significant additions to the capacity of the infrastructure.

“Without adequate office facilities and resources available to the lecturers, the impact on the quality of education and knowledge for the faculty students is even more affected,” he said.

With 36 years of working in the oil and gas upstream sector, the Geoplex Drillteq managing director encouraged the faculty students to develop their listening skills.

The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, who inaugurated the project, called on industries to engage with the school and invest in the faculty for students to thrive.

She underscored the need for every faculty to have a technical advisory board to add value to what is going on in the industry.

The VC commended the organisation for its unwavering efforts while acknowledging the role of Ogunsanya for his continuous engagement in driving the long-term development and prosperity of the school and the nation.
