The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) will host a special edition of its Journalism and Society Conversations event on X (Twitter) tomorrow from 5p.m. to 6.30p.m.
The event with the theme, ‘Nigeria at 63: What Hope for Media Independence?’ is organised to mark Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Anniversary.
The panelists include the former Managing Director of Arise Television, Ijeoma Nwogwugwu; the Publisher of PR Nigeria, Yushau Shuaib; and the Executive Director of International Press Centre (IPC), Lanre Arogundade.
Others are the Director of Programmes, Yiaga Africa, Cynthia Mbamalu; Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Print Media, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz.
While Radio Host of Nigeria Info FM, Ireti Bakare-Yusuf, will moderate the panel, it will assess the current trends within the Nigerian media landscape.
The session will delve into the pressing issues of press freedom challenges.
It will also highlight regulatory frameworks and the pivotal role of investigative journalism in holding the government accountable and contributing to nation-building.
“The session will also proffer possible solutions for an improved synergy between the government, its agencies, non-state actors and the media to promote press freedom in Nigeria,” it added.
The WSCIJ’s Journalism and Society Conversations is a forum for online discussions about the place of the media in society – nationally and globally.
The organisers noted that the virtual engagement provides a safe space for stakeholders to access how journalists and the media perform and learn from experience sharing.
“This edition is inclusive and welcomes participation from journalists, law enforcement agents, civil society organisations, human rights advocates, communication students and the public,” the statement read.
